Planting Progress Report!
We have 300 tomato plants in the ground, peppers, green beans, potatoes, onions, purple hull peas, yellow squash, okra and silver crowder peas planted. I have sweet potato slips going too.
Our third patch of sweet corn is going in the ground soon along with peanuts, pumpkins, zucchini, cantaloupe, butternut squash and eggplant. Weeeeeee garden planting is so fun!
Our corn varieties will be quite diverse this year if they all produce. We are planting conventionally grown Sweet G-90 hybrid, heirloom peaches and cream, heirloom truckers favorite yellow, Kandy Korn hybrid, Bodacious hybrid and heirloom silver queen.
Our field corn will be a traditional yellow hybrid, heirloom Hickory King or an heirloom Reid’s dent variety.
I’m even planting mung beans, a big field of sunflowers, butter beans and So much more…

Fall Produce Growing
Here’s a few pics of our Fall produce growing in the field!
Turnips And Icicle Radishes!
Welcome these lovely turnips and icicle radishes into your fall/winter diet with open arms!
There are so many ways to fix them, I thought I’d share a few from my kitchen to yours.
Turnips- they are so nutritious and winter hardy, you are REALLY missing out if you don’t include them in your families meal plan every week. Are you worried about them being bitter or too fibrous? Those are easy problems to deal with. First, just be sure to buy them young enough so they aren’t getting so old that their turning fibrous. Second, use one or more of the methods I describe next to solve the bitterness issues.
1) remove the peel and remove most of the bitterness.
2) adding some sea salt to your turnips helps neutralize that bitterness.
3) boil them a few minutes and change out the water once before returning them to cooking.
Bingo! Problem solved. Now start enjoying this versatile, hearty and healthy winter veggie.
Icicle radishes are an heirloom variety and a more rare treat to find. I’ll only have these available for a limited time.
They are spicy hot when eaten raw, making them a great addition to salads, coleslaw and bunched up on your favorite sandwich. Alternatively, if you cook them, that hotness cooks right out and you have a veggie tasting much like cooked carrot. Add these in anywhere you’d add cooked potatoes or carrots. SO DELISH!
Feel free to add your own recipe creations, I’m sure others reading this post will appreciate it.
Come get yours from me ASAP!
Working In The Garden
You might ask yourself: “I wonder what she’s working on today?”
Well, I’ll share that information with you. I’m turning my purple hull pea field from this….into that. See pics below!
Peas Coming In Strong
The peas are coming in strong! They’ve been planted, weeded, fertilized, talked to, loved on, picked, hulled, sorted, washed and bagged. Ready for your final inspection before putting in the pot with a ham hock, onions, a little salt or bacon, with some cornbread, or….how do you cook your peas?
They are $5 per 1 pound bag. $13.50 if you buy 3 bags at once. I’ll have them tomorrow and Saturday at the Farmer’s Market, until I sell out.
If you would like to reserve some for yourself instead of risking a quick sell out, you can request them here on this post. I accept Paypal and Credit/Debit card for your reservation order. Pick up at the market or we can meet in Senatobia at a more convenient time/date. ** Customer reservations filled in the order in which they are received on this post.
